Photos of My Collection from December 2005

New Speakers I bought a new pair of bookshelf speakers this past year. They are Altec Lansing Atlantics, two-ways with 10 inch woofers and dual tweeters. They are not as deep as the Cerwin-Vega D-1s that used to sit on top of this shelf, and they sound good too. I have not been able to find much information about this particular model, but Altec Lansing is a well-regarded speaker manufacturer.

The other photos below from April show the Cerwin-Vegas, which did not have grills.

Technics SL-1700Mk2 Turntable I've added a turntable to my bedroom stereo system. It is a second-hand Technics SL-1700Mk2, very similar to the well-known SL-1200Mk2 that is the standard DJ table.

It is sitting on the middle shelf of the plastic shelving unit, a shelf below the rest of the stereo. I already have five headshells and three cartridges, which are easy to switch out. The extra carts and other accessories are kept in the cigar box.

Box Sets
Having a working turntable again, I've gotten my vinyl out of storage. I've had these plastic crates for decades, and they are mostly full of 12" singles and EPS, including many remixes and B-sides never released on CD. They are temporarily on the floor in the way of everything; I hope to get them moved to a better location soon.

Photos of My Collection from April 2005

View of the whole collection My CD collection was once kept in my den, but then I became the parent of a daughter. My den became the baby's bedroom, and my collection moved upstairs to a corner of the master bedroom. This corner is at the foot of the bed on the side where I sleep. Not the best situation, but they are out of direct sunlight, and we keep our daughter from going upstairs so she has not yet gotten into them to make a mess.

In addition to my CD collection, all of my camping equipment also lives in this corner of my bedroom, on some of the plastic shelves on the right.

The wooden shelves on the left of the photo have been there unchanged for many years, so see the 2004 photos below for more shots of them. The rest of these April photos will be of everything else, which has all changed since then.

New Black Shelf
I bought this black shelf unit in late 2004 from the local Big Lots; it was only $70 because it was a floor demonstration model. I drove it the mile home tied to the luggage rack of my wife's minivan since it was too large to get it inside already assembled. It is working much better than the shelf it replaced; it has much more room and the shelves do not sag.

This unit contains the end of the alphabetically shelved CDs, along with box sets, various artists collections, and sections for Throbbing Gristle, Soft Cell/Marc Almond, The Smiths, Joy Division/New Order, and Bauhaus; along with related solo artists and side projects. On top are a pair of Cerwin-Vega D-1 speakers (my second pair) I recently purchased and refoamed in early 2005; the tuner/CD player/integrated amp that drive them are on the plastic shelves, seen at the top right of the photo. The right third of the unit is behind the plastic shelf and old small shelf, and mostly holds empty jewel cases and DVD boxes.

Box Sets Plastic Shelf
The photo on the left is of my box sets. The deeper of the bunch (including large format books) sit on top between the speakers. The box sets that are narrower (CD case depth) are on the shelves below. I still need to get more large poly bags to protect all of these, not just some. The New Order Retro and Joy Division Heart and Soul boxes were not on the shelf when I took this photo, so there's an empty spot in the middle of the shot.

The photo on the right is the smaller shelf that used to be on the back wall. I had moved it out of the bedroom, but my wife found its new location to be in her way so I moved it back in. It faces the large wall wooden unit with its back against the plastic shelf, and currently holds DVDs, empty cases for the CDs currently in the 101 CD changer in the living room, and books (mostly music-related).

Stereo System This shelf on the plastic unit holds the stereo system. This is the spot where the large box sets used to sit. Top down, there's a cheap DVD player (the TV is behind the stereo from this angle, sitting on a dresser), a Pioneer TX-610 tuner, a Pioneer SA-510 integrated amplifier, and a Kenwood CD-204 five CD changer. Other than the DVD player, these all used to be in my living room system (driving a different pair of Cerwin Vega D-1 speakers), but I upgraded my equipment there to a top of the line Pioneer SA-9800 amp and TX-9800 tuner, and moved these old favorite components to the bedroom.

More Stereo System
Here is all of the stereo equipment in one shot. The tuner and amp on top of the speaker are a recent purchase; they are my third Pioneer flouroscan pair and I am still working on fixing them. The equipment in the above photo is on the right here, sitting at a right angle to the speakers they are driving. The speakers are secured to the top of the black shelf with plastic-tack to keep them from falling. Yes, I know the CV logo on the dust caps of the woofers are upside-down; I meant to do that.

View from Bed
In closing, another view of my collection. This is the view I usually see, taken from my side of the bed where I sleep at night, and sometimes sit up to read. Most of my music listening is still done from this spot. While I cannot control everything with a remote, the Kenwood CD changer does have a remote which includes a volume control, which comes in handy.

Of the three shelves of the plastic unit that can be seen from here, the top one has the stereo and some other audio equipment, the middle has more of the same (and is the planned location for my turntable, once I get a new stylus), and the bottom shelf (behind the first aid kit) holds the retired black plastic Phillips stereo. The top and bottom shelves (not seen here) still hold camping equipment.

Photos of My Collection from September 2004

View of the whole collection This is the big view of my collection as it looked back in September, before I got the new black shelf, and was still using a crappy Phillips all-in-one box for my bedroom stereo.

Large Wall Shelf This large shelf unit is actually eight smaller units I bought for $15 each and assembled myself, then fastened together. They are joined together two high and four across. Each of the smaller units has five shelves and were supposed to hold 250 CDs each. Since I own a good number of CDs in digipacks and slim-line cases, this set of shelves currently holds more than the theoretical 2000 capacity. I finally outgrew it in 2002; I wish I had more of these.

The top two shelves on the left hold recent purchases, and the shelf below that has the jazz and classical titles. The rest of these shelves hold pop/rock CDs alphabetical by artist. This shelf remains the same as it was last year.

Smaller Shelf
I bought this smaller shelf unit in 2003 from Target. I have had problems with it; the shelves are sagging in the center. I currently am using it around the corner from where it sat in this photo, with less weight on the shelves.

The top four shelves held CDs by Throbbing Gristle, Soft Cell/Marc Almond, The Smiths, Joy Division/New Order, and Bauhaus; along with related solo artists and side projects. The bottom two shelves held collections of various artists. On top were some smaller box sets between a pair a speakers I no longer use.

Portable Cases on Floor Plastic Shelf
Back when I was a college radio DJ in the 1980s, and my CD collection was in its infancy, I kept them in these black Case Logic portable cases so I could easily move them back and forth between my dorm room and the radio station. Until recently, I used one to move CDs back and forth between home and work.

At the time these photos were taken, the top two held my CDs by The Fall and the bottom one helds CDs waiting to be refiled on the shelves.

The end view of the plastic shelves shows the two that hold music; the other three shelves hold camping equipment. The lower of the two helds my old stereo I no longer use (a prize I won from CokeMusic.com) and the higher held the larger of the odd-size CD packages and some portable CD and MP3 players (including two more CokeMusic prizes). The CD cases on top of the stereo were from the discs in the changer.

Odd Size Shelf This plastic shelf held the larger of the box sets, large books that came with CDs in the back, and other oversized CD packages. Some of these are in plastic and some are not; I need to get more large poly bags to cover the rest.

Fall Poster
This poster used to hang on the wall above the small shelf unit. I bought this for one dollar at The Fall concert I went to during their US tour in April 2004. With the ornate image of the frame as part of the poster, this edgeless frame works well. I've got some other postcards and posters I ought to frame, but my wall space has become even more limited. This poster remains framed but is not on the wall.

Shelf Detail with Letter Tabs
This is a close-up view of some of the shelves of the large unit. Some of the CDs (those not in standard jewel cases) are in poly bags with resealable flaps; you can see some of them in this photo. As a true music collector geek, I also bought a set of letter tabs to go on my CD shelves.

View from Bed
This is the view I usually saw, taken from my side of the bed. By putting the stereo on the end of the plastic shelf, I was control it with the remote from bed, and the speakers pointed directly at me. The sound quality has really improved since I replaced this black plastic stereo with a real system.
